Elaine graduated from Elkader High School in 1947 and attended Elkader Junior College for one year and earned a Standard Elementary Certificate from Upper Iowa University in 1949. She was a fifth or sixth grade teacher in West Union Public Schools from 1949 to 1957. She later earned a BA degree in Elementary Education in 1971 from Luther College and taught fourth grade in the Decorah Community Schools 24 years before retiring in 1992.

They have 4 children: Jan Elaine, Lynn Kay, Julie Ann and Lee Edward.

Jan (born in West Union, IA) graduated from Decorah High School in 1975 and earned a BA degree in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1979. In 1987 she earned an MA degree in Speech Pathology from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO. Jan worked 7 years for Keystone AEA in the Decorah area. She is now working for the Lake and Peninsula School District in the lliamna Lake Area of Alaska as a speech-language pathologist and preschool consultant.

Lynn (born in West Union) graduated from Decorah High School in 1977. After earning a BA degree in Communication Disorders from the University of Northern Iowa in 1981 she received an MA in Communication Disorders from UNI in 1982. Lynn married Bruce Arnold Tiemann 30 Jun 1984 in the Congregational Church in Decorah. They have 2 children, both born in Cedar Rapids, IA: Benjamin Bruce and Andrew Jacob. Lynn works as a speech-language pathologist for Grant Wood Area Education Agency in Cedar Rapids.

Julie (born in Decorah) graduated from Decorah High School in 1979. After attending Winona State University at Winona, MN for three years she went to Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, IL and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical

Therapy in 1983. After working in hospitals and nursing homes in Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois for several years she is currently employed as a traveling physical therapist for Group One Therapy.

Lee (born in Decorah) graduated from Decorah High School in 1983. He received a BA degree in Marketing: Management from UNI in 1987. He has worked for the Union Pacific Railroad since that time. Lee married Sharon Marie Wilwerding 11 Dec 1993 in St. Joseph’s Catholic church, Earling, IA. They are the parents of Ryan Joseph born in Omaha, NE.
